“Gratitude can transform common days into thanksgivings, turn routine jobs into joy, and change ordinary opportunities into blessings.” ~ William Arthur Ward
Today in the states, it is a day where we sit down and gorge ourselves on a smorgasbord of “American delicacies.” Potatoes, Gravy, stuffing, cranberry sauce, and yes, turkey. It is a miracle that our country doesn’t sink into the ocean with the amount of food we eat. According to CNN, 736 MILLION pounds of turkey is consumed. Oy vey!
Thanksgiving isn’t just about the food. Or the black Friday deals. Or the official kick off to Christmas. Or even those who decide to line up at Wal-Mart at seven PM Thanksgiving night. It isn’t even about the parade, or even the Mayflower.
It is a reminder to give thanks. While I always believe we should be filled with gratitude not just today, but every day, regardless of whether it is superfluous or significant. Today gives us that nudge to take a moment out of our exorbitantly busy lives and be grateful for everything we have.
Even if we don’t feel like it, and their have been years where I haven’t, life, complete with the good and the bad is something to be grateful for. The people who grace us with their life, whether it is our parents who gave us life, those who raised and influenced us, our friends who put up with our craziness, (of which I have a lot of) to our successes and even our defeats.
A mentor of mine, who lived in the Himalayas for years, once told me “You need the bad to appreciate the good.” I agree. If everything was so great all the time, we would be living in a certain sense of limbo. We would never appreciate the good moments, nor would we be able to appreciate those who are there for us in the bad.
We need those dualities, just like nothing is to small. Whether you are grateful to the girl who gave you the internet password at the coffee shop, or your boyfriend who stays with you through the good and the bad. The fact that I am still breathing, still alive, is a chance to be grateful.
Let every action you have, come from a place of gratitude. Because that place is also where love is. And we all need love.
Happy Thanksgiving to all the beautiful people who grace my life and make it so much better! <3
