“I love out-of-the-way, rugged places. For me, holidays are about the experiences, and the people, and the memories, rather than sitting on a nice beach getting tanned. I try to plant myself where I am and embrace what is there in front of me.” ~ Evelyn Glennie
A sign of a great town, is its restaurants. Being a foodie in New York, good eats are important. Newport did not disappoint. Literally, every where we went the food was incredible, and the restaurants decor was second to none. Many of these restaurants I could picture down in the Village, or on the Upper East Side. And the food was easily on par.
Brex and Rye
As a woman who not only should be a mermaid but also born in the roaring twenties the thought of going to a Speakeasy had me all a flappering.
And while I have been to many a speak easy some channeling Get Smart with the phone booth others all Alias with their passwords, this one was much simpler, but oh was it dangerous.
By the third night I was on a first name bases with the bartender, to the point I may have to dye my hair and change my name if I ever want to show my face there again.
While with names like the North Collins and drinks with cute umbrellas and mint as big as palm trees. The prices were incredibly reasonable. Walking in, it had the Upper East Side vibe, without any of the pretentiousness. The upstairs even had a foozeball table and bathrooms hidden behind Victorian-esque wallpaper.
American Beech
Situated in a courtyard between Brex and Rye and a pizza joint, it was an oasis of great restaurants and this one was by far my favorite. With posh comfy outdoor couches surrounding a fireplace and an outdoor bar, it was a perfect beach town restaurant with all of the upper class. The wine was delicious, and the food served tapa style equally scrumptious. The ladies and I split potato latkes, a shrimp curry, and fries that were to die for done up in a cheese sauce. I literally could have spent hours there just soaking up the vitamin D and salt air.
Lucharitos
A sign of a great town (in my book anyway) is one that serves great Mexican fair. Tacos and marks are a MUST! Lucharitos lived up to the hype and more. Not only did they specialize in seafood tacos like lobster. But their margaritas were not only mouthwatering, but also a great mixture of the staples as well as some originals. My favorite was a Jalepeno Marg that was made with jalepeno infused Vodka. How can you say no to that?
