The Power of Music

There is something about Christmas music that is positively timeless, joyful, festive, and just gives me all the feels. My Mom use to start playing it right after Labor Day when I was growing up, and I use to rock out to it until New Years. When I lived in New York I would wait for the popular radio station to switch over complete with a Rockette introduction the week before Thanksgiving. (This year it was TWO weeks before) It has always been a gamble guessing when stations would start playing. November 1 or after Thanksgiving? Or maybe a week or two before? It always makes me so giddy.

I remember dancing with my sister in the hallway to music, acting like crazy fools. The year she passed, my Mom didn’t play much Christmas music. None of us felt very festive and yet twice, once after visiting her grave, and the other my first skating session since she passed, I got in the car and N’SYNC’s Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays came on the radio. A song we would jam out too and legit blow our vocal cords because we were singing so loudly. It was a sign to pull ourselves up by our bootstraps and celebrate the season.

Music has always been important to me, despite not being able to sing. It has the power to not only evoke emotion, but to heal you. Yes, even Christmas songs. Perhaps it is because they are only played for two months if that, unless you have Spotify, but their is a magical quality that seems to connect everyone, because everyone knows the lyrics.

Favorite Songs

In true Gemini form I cannot pick a favorite, but I do have multiple favorites some that I love just because of the beat or vocals, and others that touch my soul. Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays will always remind me of my sister, and Boney-M’s Mary’s Boy Child and Brenda Lee’s Rocking around the Christmas Tree make me think of my childhood when I would dance around my parent’s house highly animated ah la Buddy the Elf because, “Santa was coming!”

Then their are the more modern songs, that one day will be as timeless as Johnny Mathis is. Carrie Underwood’s take on the classic Do you Hear What I Hear gives me all the feels and Kelly Clarkson’s Underneath the Tree makes me want to break out into dance moves. Not only does it feel like everyone knows the lyrics to Christmas songs, I might be delusional, but I think Christmas music makes everyone sing better.
