“Failure is the key to success; each mistake teaches us something.” ~ Morihei Ueshiba
When I made the decision to move to New York in literally a month, from start to finish, My type A personality was freaking out. Coming from a small town, I had a lot of peoples opinions buzzing in my ear. Then, one night over some wine and a Lady Gaga dance fest, a friend told me point blank. “Kate. Failing in New York is like succeeding everywhere else.”
Truer words had never not been spoken. In those early months, when I was broke, had no idea WHAT I was going to do, and in some ways it really did feel like I had hit rock bottom and would be crawling back to town with failure written on my forehead, those words would flash across my mind like a billboard of courage.
I came through all of it. Healthier, stronger, more passionate and definitely more confidant in what I wanted to pursue in this life. Am I a millionaire? Hell no. Regardless of what some people have told me, (and yes I would love a never ending bank for my fashion and book habits) I really don’t need to be rolling in it to be happy and successful in New York.
When I think about how scared I was to fail. How scared I sometimes still get, I give myself a mental nudge and say, “Suck it up buttercup and do it anyway.” Our failures are what define us.
As my mentor once told me. We need the bad so we can appreciate the good. With out either we will just end up being. Not feeling anything. Not experiencing what TRUE joy feels like. We will just be flowing in the wind.
Every bad relationship. Every job quit or fired. Every embarrassing moment. They aren’t failures, they are lessons. They are events, that are one step closer to putting us on the path we are meant to be on. So that we can be successful in whatever way that success means to the individual person.
Do not be afraid of failure. Embrace it. And know it is but a passing phase.
Well written I think the thought of failure is what keeps people from even trying ✨
Thank you so much for the kind words beauty! I completely agree! <3
You’re very welcome 😇😘
I really enjoyed this! I came up to New York for school from a small town in North Carolina. Sometimes I felt like I was failing and letting myself down. But a new day would begin and I would try all over again! It was tough but it made me stronger in the long run. Failure happens to all of us, it’s how we deal with it that matters!
Awe thank you beauty for reading. New York is definitely a Concrete Jungle with top and bottom food chains. Good for you to keep on going. You are so right! It is how we deal with it and how we learn from it that matters. After living here, I honestly feel like I could survive anywhere. <3
