“Being a writer is like having homework every night for the rest of your life.” ~ Lawrence Kasdan
Happy November friends! It is that time of year again. And no I am not talking about putting up the Christmas tree (though that is happening also) or the copious amounts of Christmas Carols to be played and movies to be watched, and all the gifts guides to make and gifts to shop. Nope, I am talking about the time of year where for thirty days, we push our creativity to the brink, type until we have blisters, and/or our keyboards break (whichever comes first) and drink so much coffee it might as well be our DNA. I am talking about NaNoWriMo.
For those who don’t know what Nanowrimo is, it is National Novel Writing Month. The goal is to write 50,000 words which is the shortest a novel can be. I have taken part every year, for the last 14 years which is insanity to think about, and now I feel like I have to keep my
streak participation going!
Truthfully, I wasn’t sure if I was going to take part in it this year, which seems to be a common theme the last couple years. I have been very last minute in my decision to participate. This year especially life has been so crazy. Don’t get me wrong, in the best way possible; with work, new job, apartment hunting, and moving. But it is still a lot. That said, things have a way of working out and I decided to give it a go, because honestly NaNoWriMo isn’t about whether or not you write 50,000 words. I mean my competitive self strives for that and more.
But self competitive type A behavior aside, it is about the conscientious effort of blocking time to sit down at your keyboard (or even put pen to paper) and just write. Let the words out, without judgement or wondering if this sentence can be diagrammed properly, or whether you used proper grammar. Because after all you can always edit if words are there, you can NOT edit a blank page. At its core NaNoWriMo is about inspiring the creative mind. We may not all be Mark Twains, but we all can be writers if we so choose.
So happy writing friends! I am feeling super inspired and I can not wait to get to typing! Good luck and have fun! <3
Are you doing NaNoWriMo? Have you ever done it before?
