Happy Saint Nicholas Day friends!

December 6 is the feast day of Saint Nicholas in the Christian and Christian Orthodox calendars. (though due to the Gregorian calendar it use to be celebrated on the 19 and still is in some parts of the world) Saint Nicholas who was Saint Nicholas of Myra a Grecian Bishop, also serves as inspiration for Santa Claus. He was known not only for his miracles, but his secret gift-giving.

On December 5, children leave out their shoes (and in some countries, stockings) to be filled with little treats like candy, little figurines, and in the olden days, coins. “Saint Nicholas” will fill them if the children have been good all year. In some cultures, the Feast of Saint Nicholas is actually celebrated rather then Christmas.

Childhood Memories

As a kid, we use to leave our shoes out on December 5, and I would be so excited to wake up the next morning and see what little goodies Saint Nicholas had left, which were usually candy and small tokens. It was always such a sweet celebratory surprise in anticipation for Christmas.

As an adult, my Mom STILL keeps up the sweet tradition. Not only for me and my siblings, but also my nieces and nephews. In fact she would even send me little goodies in New York, which usually helped sustain my coffeeholic ways. Last night was no different. One of the reasons I love this season so much, is because it is filled with so many memories and traditions, which is what makes it so magical.
