So “Smoothie” In The Morning

“To keep the body in good health is a duty… otherwise we shall not be able to keep our mind strong and clear.” ~ Buddha

Early Mornings

Smoothies are my go to in the morning for breakfast. They not only fill me up, but give me the energy I need to get through the day. I am not a breakfast person, unless I am meeting friends or it is a special occasion.

What?!?!

I know breakfast is the most important meal of the day, but I still struggle with it. I get up extremely early and do not really care about eating when the sun hasn’t even risen. I do not even want coffee! Unfortunately usually by the time I am ready for some grub I have been up for hours and it is almost lunch time.

Thus smoothies are the perfect solution for me. It is a nutritious “Meal” without actually being one. I can take it on the go, and I can also meal prep them a week out.

Mine consistent of protein powder, greek yogurt, greens, frozen fruit, cinnamon, chia seeds, flax seed, and oats. sometimes I add coconut oil, other times I add apple sauce or water to smooth it out, or add some local honey if my allergies are bothering me.

Recipe

1/4 to a 1/2 cup frozen fruit of your choice (I typically use blueberries, strawberries, and raspberries)

8 ounces Greek yogurt

A scoop of protein powder (I use Trader Joe’s Vanilla Whey which comes with a scoop, but I would say it is a quarter cup)

A cup of greens (again Chef’s choice. I usually do spinach and kale)

1/4 cup steel cut oats or regular

A tablespoon each of chia seeds, flax seeds, and cinnamon

A quarter cup of water

Throw everything into a blender (I use the Nutribullet and so far my curse of broken blenders seems to have stopped with it) and blend that baby up!

The Smoothie

I like my smoothie, very well, smooth (pun kind of intended?) so I blend it up for a solid thirty seconds. I also sometimes have to stop the blender, and take a dull bladed knife or spatula and mix it since the flax seed, protein powder, and chia seeds like to cling to the sides.

The measurements are all approximate, since I seem to have left my OCD measuring skills back in the days when I was a pastry chef. It really does depend on your taste buds, which is why I love this recipe. Some days I want more greens and less fruit and other days I want a sweeter smoothie.

  1. Oh heck yess, lets have a beautiful tribute to the most delicious meal replacements out there!!! My favorite homemade smoothie combination thus far is some greek yogurt, bananas, and frozen peaches. also toss in a few strawberries if I have them on hand. I want to start experimenting with adding greens into my smoothie; spinach and avocados…. I guess I need to just start playing around with different combinations. But Andrew’s mom just bought Andrew and I an actual ninja blender (we *laughably* used to use our ninja chopper….so now that we have an actual blender, real smoothie making can commence! ha

    1. Bwahaha oh my gosh I love you! This made me laugh so much!
I have to try the peaches! Trader Joes has a frozen tropical mix that has pineapple in it but I am worried about trying it with my vanilla protein powder :/ lol.
I love adding greens and you can’t really taste it! I rarely do avocado. But I do have a recipe that has avocados and chocolate protein and literally tastes like chocolate pudding!
Yay! that is awesome! It is a game changer! Haha hey whatever gets the job done! ;p Yay can not wait to see what you make! <3

  2. ‘Ello, beauty!!! Irooonic- I am currently drinking a smoothie right now! You know, it’s funny because I have never been a big smoothie person, but occasionally I absolutely crave them! This recipe sounds absolutely amazing. I cannot wait to give it a go. The heat is still clinging on here something fierce, so smoothies have been especially appealing.
