Wanderlusting: Coastal Maine

“You can either see yourself as a wave in the ocean or you can see yourself as the ocean.” ~ Oprah Winfrey

Secretly A Mermaid

If you read this blog or follow me on Facebook or Instagram, you KNOW I am a secretly a mermaid. I mean the Little Mermaid could have been written about me – If I had red hair, BUT I digress. My happy place is the ocean and while I try not to have favorites, I ADORE the Maine Coast.

Regardless of the time of year, I always have to pay a visit when I am home, no matter how chilly it is the ultimate form of therapy for me. While it wasn’t the 3 degrees it was in March, it was still on the cool side for a beach day when I made my way to one of my favorite beaches in May.

I have been to a LOT of beaches. When I travel it is pretty much a pre-requisite. After growing up in the mountains all my life, and while yes I was only an hour and a half drive away from the beach, I CRAVE the ocean. To quote Moana “It calls me.”

The Maine Coast

I won’t bore you with my serenade of love to the ocean, but there is something incredibly special and unique about the Maine Coastline and everyone who has had the pleasure to travel, explore, and visit Maine says the same thing.

Its’s what most people think of when they think beach. It is a rocky coastline made up of millennia old rocks that resemble driftwood. That alone is incredible to me, to know that these rocks have witnessed so much history and been weathered away by waves and storms and yet they are still standing so stoically.

It can be almost ominous, but it is also an incredibly majestic feeling to walk on them.

Prouts Neck

One of my favorite beaches in Maine is located in an exclusive beach community called Prout’s Neck, near Scarborough. It isn’t a traditional beach, but actually rocks you can climb on, explore and maybe even seek some mermaid treasures.

Scarborough Beach

I usually park at Scarborough Beach and walk to the cliffs. It is worth every mile, (and heck just working on that beach body) and a beautiful stroll through a gorgeous beach side community.

Scarborough Beach is a quiet more family-esque beach then some of the other Maine hot spots. There are bathrooms and changing rooms which is very much welcome and during the season they have life guards on duty.

The Perfect Morning

It was in the sixties when I visited and cloudy. Despite the weather I couldn’t resist dipping my feet in and it shockingly wasn’t THAT cold. (I promise!) It wasn’t very crowded, but I wasn’t the only person meandering about the beach, enjoying one of the last days before the hecticness of the Summer crowds converged.

I explored the beach even finding some treasures before I made my way to the Cliff Walk, which was also quiet. I had no place to be, nobody to see and I was content to sit my happy place and just let the waves wash away all my stresses.

All to soon I had to pay adieu, but not before I promised I would be back later this Summer.
