“I’ve said this so many times, but I keep coming back to this: Trends come and go. Own them and make them your own. If it doesn’t feel right, then don’t feel like you need to dress a certain way just to be trendy.” ~ Nina Garcia
The Trend
Move aside black. Move aside white. Move aside blush. The it color of colder months is not so much a color as it is a pattern. Plaid is the it color of Fall. While I have a love hate relationship with it, dating back to my days growing up in New Hampshire, where woodsman and ski bums would live in the checkered flannel print, I can not deny that it has grown on me.
Especially since many stores like Free People and Anthropologie have updated it from those boyish shirts and made it more girly with belled sleeves, brighter colors, and even lace. Yes plaid is in its heyday and I for one have jumped on the bandwagon train!

The shirt
When I saw this shirt, I was obsessed and knew it was a must have piece in my wardrobe. It combines two trends of the season, belle sleeves and plaid. While the plaid had me hesitating for a hot second, the color combination sold me. Plaid shirts typically have at least three colors and many times white or black outline the boxes. Not this shirt. The combination of navy AND green together was at once different, but still eye catching. Not to mention it was two of my favorite colors in ONE shirt.
The over all fit and material was another huge win for me.Typically plaid is synonymous with flannel, and while this shirt is made out of a soft cuddly cotton, it isn’t that heavy pajama feel. It is fitted while still having room for forgiveness if one decides to indulge in some spiced hard cider. It is longer in the back making it perfect to wear with leggings as well as jeans. The tye at the bottom adds that pop of uniqueness I always look for in my clothes.
The skirt
I had bought this skirt at a boutique called the Sweet lady Jane in Burlington. I was a little hesitant trying it on, because given my Kim K derriere, which would make even HER jealous, short skirts, especially those made of leather or suede are not the most forgiving. Yet this skirt pleasantly surprised me and is proof that things do not appear as they do on the hanger! It has even become a Fall staple. With the months still on the warm side, it is the perfect way to channel some Autumn while still staying cool.
It might be made out of suede, but it is stretchy without looking cheap. It is also extremely light weight, making it perfect for the warm spell we have had this Fall. It has a side zipper, and while it looks like a mini-skirt, there is a bit of an a-line to its structure, making it flattering for any and all body-types.
Styling these pieces
I tend to build my outfit around one focal piece. Yet, having both the skirt and the shirt, I knew they would pair well together. I even loved the fact that I didn’t have to tuck the shirt, into my skirt.
While I didn’t have to add the vest, being the vest fiend that I am, I have been obsessed with this moto inspired piece from Anthro since I bought it a couple years ago. I do not miss a chance to rock it, and it really added that finishing touch I was looking for.
Loving the boot and skirt look, I donned my favorite staple boots of the cold weather months. I finished it with my LightHouseStudioDesign cuff, and hooped earrings.
I also had my leather jacket on hand, but I really only used it for pictures.
It is definitely one of my favorite Fall and even possibly Winter looks of the season.
What do you think of the look? Are you a fan of plaid this season? How do you style it?
