“I always have to have my lipstick. Sometimes I have more than one shade: start with one color for the morning, one for night. Sometimes I have a couple shades just in case I need something more powerful for the day.” ~ L’Wren Scott
A brown lip has always screamed fall to me. Not a nude lip, or a berry, but that mahogany brown. The color of a deep oak wood that the autumn leaves fall from. While I have been daring before, venturing into such colors as fuchsia and even bright pumpkin orange, I have always stayed away from darker tones. I have watched as models and actresses rocked the black lipstick in a chic, does not scream goth style. I was not so daring.
This fall, I decided to take that step, so on a recent trip to Boston and with time to kill between meetings, I ventured into Sephora. Thankfully it was relatively empty, so the clerk could spend time with my high maintenance self. And high maintenance I was!
I had a specific look, but I wasn’t sure where to begin. I usually wear Buxom and/or Bite, but their browns were to dark with purple undertones which washed my skin out. To add to the difficulty level, I prefer a lipstick then layer a gloss over for extra shine. But again every combination just made it darker, making me appear like a vampire who was just lacking the fangs. After what seemed like hours, but was really only a half hour of putting on and taking off, until my applications became that of a three year old playing with her mother’s make-up, I finally found the match.

Make-up especially lip color really is like finding romance. It can be a frustrating tiring process, until finally success!
It had been in front of me the whole time. Right next to the application center, was the Nars counter. While the assistant was scrounging up browns from and assortment of cosmetic lines, I walked over to Nars and sitting there were three browns winking at me, beckoning for me to test them. I brought them to the woman and after she cleaned them, I tested them out. The first one was actually more of a reddish brown nd not what I was looking for. The second was once again to dark, but the last one? A match made in Lipstick Heaven! It was the brown I had imagined on my pout, not to dark, or red, or washing me out, but just the right mahogany.

Finding the lip gloss had actually been easier. While Sephora has unfortunately been doing away with Buxom in their stores, each time I had ventured in they had mentioned Anastasia to me. Knowing how much I adored Buxom, the assistant had urged me to try the lipgloss and had found a shade almost immediately in the color I wanted.
Combined both the lipstick and lipgloss created a shine that makes me want to pucker up all the time. While red is still my staple, this brown is the perfect color to welcome the autumn season!
What do you think of this color?
