What DO I Wear?!?! Scarves Galore!

If there is one accessory I love, it is the scarf. It is one of the most versatile pieces in fashion, as well as one of the oldest. Its origins can be traced from Roman times to the Qin Dynasty and onwards. It was originally used for cleanliness until the 1900s when it became more of a fashion piece. It has since evolved to many different shapes and materials, creating many different looks. It can literally make or break an outfit. Dress it up or down. Add that pizazz or make you say hell no. And of course, you can take it off and use it as a blanket when traveling. Which is one of my favorite “looks!”

While you can wear the scarf year round switching out fabrics and styles, it definitely has a “Season” and we are in it! Fall and winter, let your scarf fly! Once the days shorten, I rarely leave my apartment without one. It is an essential part of my wardrobe during the colder months. Here are some different styles of scarves to help you discern which you like best.

The Rectangle Scarf: 

By far the most popular style of scarf, the rectangular scarf is just one continuous piece of fabric making many varied looks. While originally popular for those cold winter looks, thinner fabrics has made this scarf a year round staple. Whether you just let it hang in front, Loop it a couple times or attempt a fancier design like the bow (which I admit I have yet to master) the options are endless.

Infinity Scarf:

This style is one of my least favorite. One continuous piece of fabric shaped like a circle. While it is still incredibly popular, I tend to avoid this style, due to the fact it isn’t as versatile as the blanket scarf the rectangle scarf. Youtube does have some good videos though if you own one, or are interested on how to style it. I generally just loop it around my neck about three times for a snuggly look around my neck.

Neckerchief: 

This could be considered the most old fashion of styles, but the most historic. While you might see someone wearing a neckerchief at the races or in a polo commercial, it was originally designed as a handy way to sweat off. It was also an easy way to identify knights and given to their beloveds during war time. Now a days it is a chic way to wear a splash of color to a suit, and could be considered the women’s tie. Shaped like a square it is usually folded in a triangle and tied around the neck.

Blanket Scarf:

By far my favorite style of scarf. Made of yards and yards of fabric usually in softer textiles like wool and cashmere, the limits of styling this scarf are endless. I always travel with a blanket scarf because, like the name suggests, the size of this makes it the perfect blanket. Youtube is your friend with this one if you need ideas to style. I love folding it into a triangle then criss crossing it behind my neck to create a “waterfall” effect. (which is actually its name) I will then either let the tails hang or tuck them in creating more volume. It is a look that keeps me warm on those chilly days!
