“Anyone who knows me knows that I am really into hair. I’m a real girly girl and love doing my hair and experimenting with different styles.” ~ Zooey Deschanel
Hair Challenged
There are some hair styles that make you feel bad awesome. (Wait, what DID you think I was going to say?) They make you stand out and give you that extra boost of confidence. You feel like you can take on the world, because yes as cliche as it is having hair as big as Texas is a confidence booster.
I have said it before, and I will say it again. I am hair challenged.
Seriously. My texture is the blonde version of Hermione Granger. Pouffy. And Bushy. Words that you really do not want to think about because they draw horrid images to the mind. At least mine.
I can spend hours on my hair and it still wouldn’t turn out right. So I don’t though I probably should, but who has time for that?
The Pouf
One style I know is a guaranteed success, I can do in five minutes and have it look well, albite mediocrely, is the pouf.
The pouf has a long, varied history. No it didn’t start with the Go-Go’s, but if you go to a museum, you can see old famous people rocking it, including the Queen of “Let them eat cake” herself Marie Antoinette.
Yes even she did the pouf seventeenth century style which meant it was bigger and might have birds twittering about in it.
// Dress: White House Black Market // Necklace: SeaMilligan Designs // Booties: Nordstrom //
Not only can I NOT do something that elaborate, thankfully we have grown with fashion and decided to ditch the birds.
Even fashion has to have progress!
The pouf not only gives a chic vibe, it also can have an edgy one. I always feel rocker chic when I wear it. Like it is my inner Madonna singing “Express Yourself.” Which I am with my hair.
Then there is the added benefit, that I get a few precious extra inches of height. Which for this legal little person, I will take what I can get.
How To Do The Pouf
People have different techniques on how to do the pouf. In fact you can even use a bump it (Yes I am totally serious!) if your hair is as flat as the Canyonlands in Utah and needs that extra oomph. I also highly recommend you youtube or Google it.
Thankfully my hair has natural body, so I do not have to tease or go all Aqua Net with it.
I grab about a two inch section at the top of my head, making sure that it is even on both sides, and gently smooth any ridges with a brush, taking care not to flatten the pouf.
I then carefully push it forward creating more lift and body, before securing it with bobby pins.
Sometimes I will leave my hair down. But more often then not, I will gather up the rest of my hair, taking care to not pull on the pins as I smooth the sides, creating a high ponytail securing over where I pinned the pouf.
I then channel my inner southern gal and spray the heck out of it, smoothing any fly aways that escaped and making Aqua Net proud.
End Results
I do not know what it is about this look, but I always, ALWAYS, get compliments when I do my hair this way. Perhaps it is because my posture is a little bit straighter, I hold my head a little bit higher (what am I saying my head IS higher!) and I own it.
After all peeps confidence is beauty. When we strive for beauty we are striving to feel good about ourselves. And confidence is the best fashion accessory we can have.
Have you done the pouf? How do you wear it? What is your go to confidence boosting hair style?
