What DO I Wear?!?! The Shirtdress Fall Staple

“My wardrobe staple is simple shirt dresses. They never date, and you can put them with a heel or a flat sandal.” ~ Louise Nurding

Channeling Fall Vibes

With only glimpses of Fall every so often, unless you go to Trader Joe’s where it has literally vomited all the pumpkin your heart can desire, the struggle is real attempting to channel Autumn whilst not sweating my derriere off. Living in New York where you walk EVERYWHERE, the battle is even more dire. I have been craving blanket scarves and boots something fierce. Alas the weather has had other plans.

With the warmer temps, I have had to get creative with my Fall wardrobe opting for darker colors, and light weight layering as opposed to the Basic PSL wardrobe of sweaters and leggings. Thank the fashion Gods for the shirtdress.

The Shirt-waist Dress

Christian Dior originated this trend in the 1950’s feminizing a man’s dress shirt into the shirt-waisted dress. A dress that at the time had a full skirt, typically three-quarter length sleeves, and a notched collar.  From there their was no limit to variations that began to appear on the runways, even creating the T-Shirt dress.

Today’s version has a variety of different versions, though many of the skirts have become elongated and slimming. And have full button downs.

The Dress

I found my shirt dress at not Anthropologie(Wha–?) but White House Black Market (I know! Shocking!) It was such a great basic piece, and if you read this blog you know I am obsessed with that dark green color. Green + platinum = match made in heaven. It was a must have in my wardrobe.

This dress is made of a lightweight chiffon like material, and has buttons that go all the way down, so you can actually layer it over a tank and leggings. While it is long sleeved, there are buttons on the side turning it into three quarter length (versatility people!) sleeves in as long as it takes to button it! It also comes with a sash that you can either remove or keep on to cinch at the waist.

All in all this is an incredibly versatile dress and you know how this girl likes her options!

Styling

It has been perfect for Fall because it is such a lightweight material, yet because of the color, screams those spooky ghouls vibes.

To keep myself cool so I am not sweating buckets (true story) I have switched out the scarf and paired it with a lighter sweater vest. While I love my boots, I keep cool with a pair of black lace wedges. I also keep my jewelry darker trading my nautical SeaMilligan Design necklaces for a gold and black jeweled pendant from Anthropologie. I add a wine colored lip from Bite Beauty and I am all set to rock out those fall vibes regardless of what the thermometer reads!

  1. Soooo cute, no surprise here! Truth be told, I NEVER wear dresses unless I’m going to a wedding. Lol. Despite that small, insignificant detail, I love shirt dresses! It’s finally getting cooler here in Atlanta…thank goodness; I can’t take anymore of this 80+ degree weather!

    1. Awe thanks beauty! It is so funny what our different style preferences are from fashionista to fashionista. 😀 I live in dresses pretty much year round 🙂 I always think of the shirt dress as a long tunic. Up until a couple years ago I almost always paired it with leggings. Uhhhh I am so jealous! It is still seventies (and some days eighties here) basically we have your weather lol 🙂 <3

    1. Bwhahahaha they did! I dunno. It was someone who is fabulous and amazing, and beautiful and stunning and all around just an incredible person ;p <3 Awe thank you beauty! And thank you for being an amazing photographer! (Wait until I do the outfit from Brooklyn!) <3
